Policy - Smart Act

Smart Act- The Smart Act legislation is written to offer an alternative of drug school programs in lieu of incarceration for non violent drug offenders. The legislation affords the opportunity for a community with high rates of drug offense incarcerations to ask for funding to implement a drug school in their community in conjunction with the local State Attorney's Office. This legislation is unique as it is the only criminal justice reform bill worked on by the community as well the State Attorney's Office in Cook County. The legislation passed the general assembly unanimously and is now awaiting appropriation.

Mozaffar wrote and negotiated the legislation on request of the Developing Justice Coalition, a powerful and inspiring coaltion of community organizations fighting for criminal justice reform in the state of Illinois.
