Policy - Food Deserts

Food Deserts are designated areas in Illinois that are void of access to healthy fresh food options, as defined by researcher and policy expert Mari Gallagher. Food Deserts are predominantly African American and Hispanic and are located in the underserved communities throughout the state. There is evidence of a positive correlation between high numbers of diseases such as diabetes and cancer and the lack of access to fresh foods on a daily basis.

The Fresh Food Fund, section 205 Senate Bill 1221- The capital bill, appropriates 10 million dollars to go towards purveyors of fresh food in order to improve access to fresh foods for community members living in underserved areas in Illinois.

Mozaffar wrote Senate Joint Resolution 92, sponsored by Senator Jacqueline Collins of the 16th District of Illinois on Food Deserts and has been asked by Senator Jacqueline Collins to lead the policy task force for the Fresh Food Fund. The task force is comprised of dedicated and passionate individuals who care deeply about the issue and would like to see the advancement of a fresh food legislation implemented. Members of the task force are Deborah Harrington of the Woods Foundation, Debbie Hillman and Jim Braun of the Fresh Food Council, Karin Norrington Reaves of the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity, Alderman Freddrena Lyles of the 6th Ward of Chicago and of course Senator Jacqueline Collins.
